Why we think McLaren Vale Grenache is the best

McLaren Vale’s Grenache has long been known as the jewel in the region’s crown. James Halliday, Australia’s leading wine critic, has confirmed it.

On International Grenache Day (September 19th) a couple of years back, he made the statement prior to his visit to McLaren Vale: “it also happens that Australia’s greatest Grenache is grown and made in McLaren Vale. It has more depth and structure than most grenaches from other regions.”

We tend to agree, and often refer to Grenache as our Mediterranean Pinot Noir. In a way, you could look at it as McLaren Vale’s version of a Pinot Noir in terms of its palate weight and the way that we handle it, that is, to retain its natural acid structure and focus on early ripening for flavours of red berries, plums and violets.

From our experience, Grenache has grown well in McLaren Vale due to our Mediterranean climate which heeds well to this luscious variety.  Our Grenache vineyard, based in Blewitt Springs (sub-region of McLaren Flat) is an old bush vineyard. With over half a century under its belt, the vineyard tends to manage its own way. We treat our vines with tender loving care; we give it what it needs to produce the best fruit it can in optimal growing conditions with minimal viticultural interference.

Hey Brad, Just got my Zonte's Reds I ordered from you on Sunday at the GF&W show in Melbourne. We had a bit of a chat, which you prolly won't remember, but I used to be involved in Pott's and media. Chocolate Factory - Oh my Dog!! Love it. Trying to do it slowly!! Gosh!! Cheers, Peter
