It's International Barbera Appreciation Day!

Fun Facts About Barbera

#1 - It is the third most planted grape variety in Italy.

#2 - It isn't as high regarded as the Nebbiolo grape, so it doesn't have the best grape-growing "real estate" such as South-facing slopes, however, it is mostly grown in the valleys and slopes of Northern Italy.

#3 - It is considered the 'wine of the people' i.e., meant to be drunk young and quite affordable! (consider our TROPHY-WINNING Canto di Lago!)

#4 - Barbera vineyards cover 25,454 hectares worldwide.

#5 - It is considered to have 'mish mash' flavour... why does it taste both rich AND light-bodied? A reason for that has been explained by its dark-staining pigments in the grape that make the wine a near-black colour, when on the other side, the taste includes notes of strawberry and sour cherry (often characteristics found in lighter-bodied style wines). The light tannin and high acidity then make it a 'juicy wine'. Confusing huh? We however find this variety of wine cool to appreciate for it's complexities in palate character.
